Gay Indian Women & Men?

Being gay, I have never met a gay male or female that was Indian (India) in America. I wanted to see what is the social attitude is towards gay individuals in the community? Both in India, and in America (family/Indian community). I know of the men that cut off their parts and live as women. I can't think of the name, but people must give money or they get cursed. Not untouchables, but the other term. From what I have seen and read, they are often used to bless a wedding, but I may be wrong. But they appear to be more a-sexual, and not really gay. I want to know about gay men and women. Can a gay couple walk down the street holding hands? Kiss in public? Gay clubs? etc... There are various religions, and I know each will react towards homosexuality differently. Can anyone provide information on how different religions treat homosexuals? I really want to go to India for a month, and experience everything, but I want to know what my partner and I are getting ourselves into.

  1. "I know of the men that cut off their parts and live as women." They are called Hijras. In English, they are referred to as "eunuchs". Take a look at the link below for more info. The social attitudes towards gay individuals is more tolerant in America and UK, not in India. As far as I know, it is illegal to be gay in India. Despite my saying this, there are still people who are less tolerant about it in Western countries.
  2. Showing affections in public is a taboo in India irrespective of being gay or not. So kissing and holding hands would fetch you lot of dirty looks from passer bys. Be sensitive and respect culture when you visit India.
  3. It is a crime in India.
