Would a chest full of coins sell higher as a lot or sold individual?

I have a chest full of American and foreign coins that my grandfather has left for me. I am dear to them, but I recently have been put under unfortunate circumstances to sell them, am in coll. It consists of pennies of all years, steel pennies, Indian heads, buffalo nickels, silver nickels, 1909vdbs, flying cents, large cents, 1800's, proof sets, mint sets, silver quarters, silver dimes, peace silver dollars, Morgan silver dollars, and more. My question is would I get more money sold as a whole lot, set in different lots, or sold individually piece by piece?

  1. definitely individually, though it takes much more work
  2. Really rare ones should definitely be sold as individual. Ones that are slightly rare are usually only valuable as a set. Research which ones are rare and not so rare and separate them. Separate the ones in good condition and the ones that are not. The ones that are in excellent condition should be sold individually.
  3. Individually for sure, but DON"T sell them. You have something very special and you even said yourself that they are dear to you. If you sell them you will probably regret it.
  4. You do not want to sell the coins as a group. In order to get the most for your coins you need to do some work on your own. Go to a coin dealer or a magazine store and get a US coin price guide, a monthly magazine such as Coin values or Coins magazine. The values are retail but they will give you an idea of what coins have value and which ones have little. You can see if your local library has a book on coin grading with it you can get an idea of what to look for on the coins that give hints to the grade of each one. If not I can give you what to look for, such as Indian Head cents, the band in the hair has LIBERTY on it, the more letters the better the grade and the higher the value. World coins is not easy and you need to find a world coin dealer. The silver coins have value, but most others from 1940 and up do not. You must know something for you put down 1909-S VDB but not in order, so you must know the coin is quite rare and valuable.
