Can Indian Tribes buy land in cities, make income from it, and not pay property taxes?

Can tribes (not individual members) buy land in cities, rent it out, whether it be a house, commercial building, mall, etc. and then not pay property taxes on it? It seems like tribes should do this and they could make a lot of money. If they have to pay taxes on non-reservation land why did my local county get upset when the Indian Tribe bought farmland, put it in trust, and then the county lost out on those taxes? If they put land in a trust to avoid property taxes can they do that anywhere?

  1. Indian tribes can invest in property in cities or anywhere outside of their reservation, but would be subject to property tax like everyone else. The only place they are tax exempt is within the reservation.
  2. linkin might be talking about his state. In my state, CA, they can do this, no taxes. They are limited to business though. Generally they put a casino in. Pay no taxes, and the county has to provide roads, sewer access, water, power access, all for free. Some counties are completely broke because of the costs of this. I have no idea if other states collect taxes or not. I would have thought not, but linkin is pretty reliable, so his state must.
