- Personal finances are fairly simply. It is mostly basic addition and subtraction. Very rarely in personal finances do you need more than that. It can get more complicated if you like to chart your finances in percentages.
- Mostly it is the discipline [that advanced mathematics imparts] to do things step by step, keeping good records and documenting your work, not making mistakes (have internal warning lights in your brain to tell you if something does not look right), problem solving skills ( like balancing checking account statements), analysis to compare options, decision making ability, how to stretch a dollar, and then you have understanding Time Value of Money functions and using Excel spreadsheets, besides using routine arithmetic (plus converting fractions to percentages, a favorite on Y!A). A solid basic understanding of payroll, payroll taxes, income taxes and tax forms is very much needed! {Think logically, then illogically, like the government!} In summary, the actual math needed is secondary in the overall task.
