- try the post office they do commission free foreign exchange may take them a couple of day to get them or go to your bank or any major travel agent
- YOU WILL GET A BETTER RATE IN INDIA, GOOD LUCK.
- Buy it from any foreign money exchange counter.
- if you are in the UK - you can't buy the Indian currency here. you have to get it in India & you are not supposed to bring their currency out of the country when you return.
- I always use the cash machine in the airports in India as the currency is not supposed to leave the country. In general there are 2 types of machine, one will give you about 6000Rp and the other 12,000Rp, I think it depends on the size of the bank. I have found that even in the smallest branches the ATM seems happy with international cards. If you are worried about security get one of those money cards that you charge up before you go. Try to break big notes when you have the chance as many small places do not have enough money to change them. 10Rp and similar are really handy to have. Obviously take normal care and watch out for pickpockets in tourist areas, a money belt is a good idea as what seems normal money to us is a small fortune to many Indians. Things are generally cheap in India so be careful not to get too much money. PS if you want to buy silk as presents do not buy it at the airports, it is better value elsewhere.
- wait until you get to India- I know at Delhi airport there a loads of foreign exchange and the rates are low to nothing! Make sure you count the money though so that you don't get cheated!
