Can a NRI(Non-Resident Indian) have a credit card from an Indian bank like ICICI, HDFC bank?
I was told by HDFC bank that if I stay overseas(outside India) for more than 183 days, I am a NRI(Non-Resident Indian) so my credit card will be cancelled. HDFC bank does not issue credit cards for NRI's according to RBI(Reserve Bank of India) regulations. Can someone please clarify this? Thanks Thanks to all who replied. Well, RBI(Reserve Bank of India) does not have such guidelines. It depends on bank to bank. A SBI(State Bank of India) NRI department official told me NRI's can get credit cards as long as the spending is for bonafide purpose and in accordance with FEMA regulations. If RBI had guidelines to not issue credit cards to NRI's, certainly a nationalized bank like SBI would be aware and would be adhering to it. Hope it helps someone like me.

- If you're a NRI then why bother? Hell with those Indian banks. You've got several options from banks based in US without any tags.
- If you are living in another country you should get a credit card there.
- Literally not but i know NRI people holding new generation banks credit card..If you have got a normal saving account with bank they will have the flexibility to issue card for you.. Why Credit card,if you have got a promising NRI account most of the banks are ready to give you loans at wavering interest rates
