My friend and I caught the end of it on (American) television a few years ago. It was the public / international station in NY which has undergone many changes in the years since. It was in color and seemed to have been made within the decade, and it was without a doubt not a Bollywood musical. The final scene included several bearded men in white turbans and white clothes carrying a wooden casket up a hill in the daytime, and there was a song playing over-head with the (sub-titled) lyrics to the effect of "who lives and who dies". I do not know the dialect, but my friend said it was most likely from the northern part of India. My friend said there was a previous scene in which a man visited his ancestral home as it was being torn down (or had already been torn down) and said something to to the effect of "I'm free". For years we have been trying to track down the movie, as the few minutes of it we saw were so powerful and haunting that we knew the film must have been a masterpiece. If anyone happens to know the film (or, if not, where we might be able to find out), we would be forever in your debt.
