How can I, as a half Cherokee Indian, get money from the government to pay for school?
My father is full blooded Cherokee Indian and my mother is an African American. I know that there are grants of some kind that will pay for my education but I can not seem to find them. I'd also like to know how to get my share of casino money. Sounds petty but I really need the money and I feel it is part of my rights as Native American.

- You have no rights as a native American, you have rights as an American, but you don't get extra rights because you are "part" native American.
- You have your feelings but the Federal Gov. has others. Ever hear of 'Detribalization'? It is 'legal' genocide, without the bloodshed. As a Native American, you are the only minority who has to prove your ethnicity. To get status as a Native American, you have to prove your bloodline. This typically involves lawyers, several years, & lots of money. This is premeditated to reduce the rolls of 'Native Americans'. When all Native Americans 'disappear', unkept treaties become moot. Rights & consideration as a result of 'Treaties' and/or Reservation resources are excluded until you can document/prove your tribal affiliation.
- You can find out what grants you qualify for by enrolling in school. Talk to a school counselor; they'll help you apply. As far as the other question, if you can prove you're at least 1/4 Native American you can move to Oklahoma to get the best government hand-outs. However if you've appreciated a lifestyle removed from the reservation I think it's unfair for you to take advantage of the system like that. Go get a job and work your way through school. You WILL appreciate the education you receive MORE if its paid for by YOU.
- Are you enrolled in a federally recognized Cherokee tribe? If not you are entitled to nothing. If so, contact your tribe of enrollment. I'm assuming you're not enrolled because if you were you'd know that the answers to your questions/misguided remarks are as follows: How can you get money from the government to pay for school? (I'm assuming you mean the US Government.) *There is no money that Native people get from the US Government to pay for school. *Grants come from your tribe of enrollment. If you're enrolled contact your tribe. If you're not enrolled you don't qualify. *Your share of casino money only comes if 1) You're enrolled in a tribe that has a casino and 2) Your tribe distributes per capita payments to its members/citizens. *If you need money you'll have to work for it like the rest of us enrolled tribal members. *Unless you're enrolled you have no "rights" as a "Native American" Finally, American Indian is the legal term used to describe enrolled members/citizens of US federally recognized tribes. It's not about "race" and all about citizenship in a sovereign tribal nation. Each tribe (not the US Government) determines who is and who isn't one of them just like every other nation on the planet.
