What is stopping the USA from doing a Free Trade Agreement with India?

Public Comments

  1. The same thing that's stopping the US from having free-trade with other nations: POLITICS. Politics and political issues are the main reason why nations don't enter into beneficial trade agreements OR why they have trade restrictions against each other.
  2. Because we'd lose even more jobs overseas. With unemployment at 8%, I don't think we can afford any more free trade. We saw what NAFTA did, I don't think we can continue to follow through on this rocky path.
  3. Relations with Pakistan.
  4. A lot of opposition from labor unions.
  5. India already has plenty of US dollars. End Free Trade Agreements everywhere.
  6. Nothing really. But bi-lateral trade agreements are worth wild, but in regard to the US and India, in the past the US has demanded not just greater liberalization but pre-investment national treatment, something that India is not interested in. But, on the other side of things, like goods for instance, the US, which is the world's largest trader, is known for seeking steep tariff cuts. This is not always good for the farmers which is not good for the government and industry.
  7. Our inability to compete with their employee cost. How can a U. S. manufacturer compete with an average hourly rate of $1.00 with no fringe benefits. Heck they would kick our b---.
