Critical Summary In the story, “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, Tom Walker sells his soul to the devil for wealth and fortune. Tom Walker lived in New England with his wife. Tom was a thin, miserly man and his wife was equally miserly. One day as Tom took a shortcut home and ventured into a swamp. He met a tall black man, the devil, with an ax in his hand. The black man told Tom that Kidd’s treasure was close to the morass. Once Tom’s wife was informed about the treasure, she went to look for the black man several times and never came back. Tom went back to the swamp once again in search for their household valuables rather than his wife. Once he met the black man again he made a deal and became filthy rich a few days later. Later on he broke his promise and the black man’s horse rode Tom away to the old Indian fort where he was killed by lightning. His gold became cinder and his house burnt to the ground the next day. Selling your soul to the devil will never come out good. This archetypal story relates to American Romanticism in many aspects. Romantics valued individual freedom and the worth of the individual. Tom and his wife were not only miserly but they were also independent of one another. “They were so miserly that they even conspired to cheat each other” (Irving, 154). Romantics don’t trust progress. In this story, progress led to Tom’s death. His wanting for money and improvement led him to his mere defeat. Romantics believe that nature is already the best there is. They seek unspoiled nature. They dislike cities and other places where many bad things lurk around. In the cities when economy goes bad, life becomes hard. Critical Reflection I don’t believe that the devil ever make good deals or bargains. If a stranger offers me something I will always deny him not because he is a stranger or a devil but because it’s not safe to take stuff from others that you don’t know. Even if they don’t ask for something in return, I don’t like take something that is precarious. Many people are miserly and will be happy to take anything from strangers, but most people don’t because cities can be a bad place. Romanticism is all around us in our daily lives. Many people have Romantic backgrounds. A lot of poetry is written in a Romantic format and drawings are in a Romantic style. Some music that we listen to is Romantic. Most if not all the heroes on television, videos, and movies are Romantic based. Romantics valued imagination and intuition so their art, music, and poetry are unique in many ways. Some people like how it was different from present day music so they value it. Romanticism is in our background but we aren’t really Romantics. We like to use reason and logic to solve our problem rather than imagination and intuition. With this logic and ability to reason, it can be logically proven that reason and logic is much better in solving a problem then imagination and intuition. By using imagination and intuition they make up stuff with what they already know from their history rather than finding facts to prove natural occurrence. I also disagree with Romantics in their perspective of individual self and individual freedom. People works so much better as a whole even though, there is more mistakes and arguments. I partial agree that cities are not a good place and progress can be bad. Cities are where pollutions developed and there are many other bad things. There is now an economic depression as we are making progress. Nature is truly a beautiful sight. I’m not a Romantic yet I value some of their beliefs. 2. Try putting your Critical Reflection & Critical Summary in a 123 fast and easy. It's when you have an introduction (to catch the readers attention) for the first paragraph and have a thesis (the subtopics you will have in your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd paragraph(s)). Then you restate one of your subtopics and talk about it. Continue this method untill you have completed all of your subtopics. Then you'll have a conclusion, basically restating your thesis and another explanation of what you said and why. Hope that helps
