I think India won independence from GB in 1949, but they still make the Royal Enfield there, one of the classic, good-looking efforts that died the same death as all Brithish bikes when the Japanese took over the industry in the late sixties with cheap, reliable machines that were affordable to everyone. The model that is still made in India, a 250, is exactly the same as the pre-1956 Royal Enfield that was made in Bradford-on-Avon. They can be bought in the USA -- I've seen them occasionally advertised in bike rags -- but I don't know exactly how to go about finding the importer. Still, this would be a pretty whimsical purchase because the Kawasaki Ninja 250, also set to be made in India, is a far better machine that will not be nearly as difficult to keep running and get serviced.
