Some questions about gold, please?

Although I am not exactly "together" enough yet to ask this I will try!! It is true, is it not, that in the past it was a favorite study of the alchemists to find something to replace (?) gold. However, there is a gap in my information here, because I notice that today we have the following, for ex: 1) gold paint, both oil-based, and water based 2) gold trim for garments, of various qualities; for gold braid, or for the borders of Indian saris ... 3) gold colored pencils, gold printer's ink 4) gold nail polish, gold eye shadow 5) and more: can't think of it right now... What happened? How do they now make the color.......is gold used in the process, or did they actually find a way to make the color anyway? Another question: What are the differences in carat? I especially would like to know about the gold that is used in India in their jewelry so dark (and rosy?). Is it something in the alloy? Thank you very much for any information ! I am especially interested in Indian gold....... and...as for paint, what colors are they mixing together to get the gold ....it is not golden, as in a golden yellow, it actually looks like the metal itself thank you
