Summary: Celebrating Korea EU Industrial Cooperation Day yesterday the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea presented awards to European companies and Korean government officials for their contributions to the bilateral relationship between the countries The chamber handed out awards to four firms and six individuals Merck a global pharmaceutical and chemical company received the Leading Investor award for committing 11 million euros $14 million to research and development in Korea and supporting the display industry The company opened the Advanced Technology Center in May Boehringer Ingelheim Korea a supplier and marketer of prescription medicine and consumer and animal health products received the Social Benefactor award for its commitment to social responsibility Technology leader Schneider Electric was chosen for the Green Pioneer award while Gavin s Sausages received the SME Star honor for overcoming difficulties in establishing a business in Korea Meanwhile the Ministry for Food Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries was given the Globalized Partner award The chamber gave the Efficient Partner award to Kim Chul min senior director of the cultural industry policy division of the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism Park Jin seon director of the international exchange and cooperation division at the Ministry of Education Science and Technology and Maeng Ho young director of mental health policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare Hahn Myung kwan deputy minister for legal affairs at the Ministry of Justice received the Responsible Partner award while the Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority received the Local Government Partner award Since the Korea EU Awards were first held in 2006 to honor EU companies and government officials the awards have grown in agreement Hurtiger added Once the FTA comes into force in mid 2011 we expect there will be immense opportunities for future growth The EU which has a population of around 500 million is the world s largest economic bloc and Korea s second largest export market In 2008 trade between Korea and the EU reached $92 4 billion Korean Prime Minister Kim Hwang sik noted the significance of the FTA in his speech The EU is no doubt one of the most important economic partners for Korea he said The Korea EU FTA will inject new strength into the global economy This FTA will serve as a global FTA network
